Professional Cabinet and Furniture Painting by Flowers Painting

There are many reasons why you might want to paint your cabinets, bookshelves, or furniture. Some customers want a custom look and to be able to choose the paint color versus settling for what options present themselves at the store.

You may have aging and scratched items around the house that could use the refresh that results from a new coat of paint. Or, if you simply don’t want to purchase new items to replace outdated colors or styles you can opt for a professional paint job.

Kitchen Cabinets

One of the most popular services that we offer right now is cabinet painting. Here are the top 3 reasons homeowners choose to paint their kitchen cabinets.

  1. Costs Less – The number one reason homeowners opt to paint cabinets instead of replacing with brand new ones is the price. New kitchen cabinets can cost upwards of $30,000 to $50,000 while hiring a professional company to paint them is on average one tenth that price, depending on the size of the kitchen.
  2. Faster Than a Remodel – Painting your kitchen cabinets gives them an instant face lift. Consider this. According to an HGTV article, the typical full kitchen remodel can take between 3 and 5 months while simply repainting your cabinets can take as little as a week.
  3. Custom Colors – Another big perk of painting cabinets is that you get to choose the exact shade of white, gray, cream, blue, green, etc. paint that you desire. With new cabinets you are limited to the set list of cabinet colors produced by the manufacturer.

More Furniture Painting Opportunities

  • Bookshelves -Built in bookshelves are a coveted architectural feature. One way to make a statement is to paint your built ins with either a contrasting color or the same shade as your walls or trim.
  • Tables and Chairs – Why stop at bookshelves and cabinets? You can have your tables and chairs professionally painted to coordinate with your space.
  • Bathroom Vanities – Painting your bathroom vanity is such a fun way to add a splash of color to the space. Even builder grade cabinets can be painted for an instant upgrade. It’s recommended to use a high gloss or semi gloss paint finish in the bathroom for easy cleaning.

Your Guide to Interior Paint

It’s time to paint the interior of your home. Yay! Is it as simple as picking up a paintbrush? No, of course not. So many, many things go into an interior painting project. To help you out, we’ve created a simple guide you’ll need to get started and some things you should know before you jump into the world of paint.

Whether it’s a simple accent wall or full room refresh, consider these tips for choosing the perfect interior paint for your home.

Tips for Choosing Interior Paint Colors

Some people know exactly the shade they want on their walls, but most people, require a little research and testing before they decide. There is a lot that goes into a paint color to consider. There are resources and even whole theories related to color.

The Size of the Room

When choosing interior paint, the first thing you want to consider is the size of the room you plan to paint, and what you want to achieve. A smaller, condensed room will feel bigger with lighter shades, while a larger room will seem warm and cozy with darker shades.

The Purpose of the Room

Will it be your bedroom for sleeping, your living room for entertaining, your dining room for eating, or your office for working? The color of the room should magnify the purpose and function of the space. For example, if you want a living room to entertain guests you will want a warm shade that will make your guests feel welcomed and comfortable.

Match Your Personality

You will never go wrong with selecting some of your favorite colors. If you aren’t sure what your favorite hues are, think about what colors catch your eye when shopping, or even take a clue from your wardrobe. The colors you are drawn to with your clothing, the ones you feel good wearing, will also give you the same feeling while painted on your walls.

Paint Finishes

Once you select your paint color, there are few different finishes you can select for your paint. Selecting the right finish can make a huge difference in a room.

Flat Finish

Flat finish is commonly used for ceilings and is ideal for areas where there will be little to no traffic as it can be more difficult to clean.

Low luster, Satin, Eggshell

These finishes are great for areas that will be high traffic, like playrooms and hallways. Unlike a flat finish, these three are easy to maintain and keep clean.

Semi-Gloss or Gloss

Semi-gloss is perfect for rooms like the kitchen and bathroom, and gloss is great for railings and windowsills. It’s important to note that the higher the gloss the more magnified flaws will be on the surface.

After choosing your paint and finish, selecting the right primer is one of the most important parts. The purpose of the primer is to prepare the wall with a base coat that your paint will adhere to. The right primer will be based on the surface of your walls as well as the paint finish you selected. Cutting corners with paint quality will result in needing a new coat of paint sooner than later. High quality paint will last longer, won’t yellow with age, and provides a smoother finish.

50 Shades of Gray Paint and How to Choose

Shades of gray have been a popular go-to for wall paint for many years and it’s no surprise why. Shades of gray paint are great alternatives to white and beige walls, providing a blank slate to add personal style with decor and art. Gray hues are a fantastic foundational color to create a personalized space, or even used to make a bold statement. With more than 50 shades of gray to choose from, you really can’t go wrong.

Gray paint is a versatile neutral tone, which, unlike white, hides imperfections while complementing most colors used in decor, furniture, art, and accent paint. With so many shades of gray on the spectrum, choosing the right shade for your project can be tricky. So how do you know you’re picking the right one, the truest gray? While there is no such thing as “pure” gray; there is a perfect gray for you. This guide will help you choose from the abundant shades of gray for your perfect match.

Gray, You’re Hot Then You’re Cool

The temperature of your gray influences the overall atmosphere and feeling of your space. Color temperature refers to the coolness or darkness a shade will have on the room in which it is being used and directly correlates to how much light a room gets. Cool grays, with blue undertones, are great for crisp spaces, while warmer grays bring a soft cozy feeling to any space regardless of the size or amount of light.

This year, there has been a subtle shift in gray paint trends, as more people are choosing warm gray tones over the previously favored cool grays. Grays with rich, warm undertones of red and yellow are changing the way we feel about gray in general, bringing a new perspective to a tried-and-true shade.

Understanding Undertones

Before you choose a specific gray paint color, first, decide on one of four paint categories: Neutral Gray, Warm Gray, Cool Gray, and Dark Gray. Each of these categories houses a collection of gray shades with varying undertones from blue-gray, green-gray, to red-gray, and yellow-gray. Each undertone conveys a different mood and while still remaining overarchingly neutral, will play better with certain accent colors, styles, rooms, and feelings.

Neutral Gray- Comprising your basic shades of gray without a strong influence of either cool or warm temperature, these neutrals “play well” with others. These shades have a yellow undertone and appear the most neutral yet appear warm and bright. They fit best in minimally lit rooms and complement a wide range of decor and fit into most homes with ease.

Warm Gray- As we gravitate away from the cool grays to warmer, cozier grays, these tones have a red undertone, which can be affected by the lighting of a room as to how they appear within a space. Red-Gray tones can often look pinkish, or even purple and perform best in warm, incandescent lighting. Balanced shades of gray will have a perfect amount of both blue and red undertones and appear to be the most like a “true gray”.

Cool Gray- Most people associate gray with cool gray, or gray with a blue undertone as the truest form of gray. Cool grays work well in south facing rooms, or warm rooms where these cool tones can hold their value without appearing dull or dreary. Blue undertone grays when paired with green undertones will give a warmer, energetic feeling to the shade while still keeping the light, cool, airy feeling from the blue undertones.

Dark Gray- These bold, eye-catching hues bring all the drama to make a statement. Shades of deep gray and charcoal give a modern, even industrial look to the space. These grays pair well with bright whites, natural wood, and soft furnishings for a sophisticated, yet modern aesthetic.

50 Shades of Gray and Counting: How to Use the Hue

Choosing the perfect shade of gray really depends a lot on personal preference, style, and of course, the space. The most popular gray paints tend to be the most versatile; shades such as Agreeable Gray from Sherwin-Williams and Coventry Gray by Benjamin Moore are popular grays right now. Implementing more than one gray throughout your home offers a complete and cohesive look while adding depth and flow from room to room. When using an all gray palette, layering materials is important to keep the look comprehensive and sophisticated. A monochromatic gray palette can be just as stimulating as bolder color choices when properly done.

A color specialist from Lick Home advises, ‘ Gray plays as a beautiful neutral with earthy tones and pairs perfectly with dusky pinks and rich greens. Gray is also the perfect backdrop for stronger colors, like rich yellows and blues, helping to balance the scheme.’

Whether you opt for the barely-there light and airy gray or go for a more daring charcoal, gray remains a go-to versatile paint color that is not going anywhere anytime soon. Understanding the different tones and shades of gray and where they work best and how to pair them with accent trim, furniture, and accessories before choosing your perfect paint color is vital. This guide just scratches the surface of the many shades of gray and how to use them. For more information or help from an expert, contact Flowers Painting for a consultation.

How to Use Paint Samples to Pick the Perfect Paint Color

The first step to beginning any interior paint project is selecting the right paint color for the job—this can be quite challenging with the abundant choices of colors, finishes, sheens, and products on the market. How do you know you’re choosing the perfect paint for your project? Using tools like color swatches can be helpful to start narrowing your color search, and even tools like the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap® Paint Color Visualizer can be incredibly helpful to see what the color will look like in the room. But even swatches and room visualizers have their limitations.

Swatches look significantly different than actual paint on a wall—and look different in the store. You’re taking a very small piece of cardstock and applying it to the large surface of a whole wall, or better yet, an entire room. Lighting, room size, your furniture and decor all impact your decision. To truly determine the perfect color paint for your project, paint samples are a vital step in the process.

Follow this “how to” guide for the best way to use paint testers to find the best shade for your walls.

Selecting the Color to Sample

First thing’s first, choosing the hue you want to apply to the walls. Before you even attempt to start sampling actual color on the wall, start with a collection of paint chips. Borrow a selection of hues and place them in the room you plan to paint. Consider them at various angles, at different times of day and lighting, and use your decor and furniture as a backdrop to see which shade will be the best match for the look you’re trying to achieve. Keep in mind that hues even in the same color family with similar undertones will appear differently when applied “in the flesh”.

Once you have narrowed down your search, choose 3 colors to test on a larger area, this way you can see the subtle undertones of each that can be difficult to detect from a small swatch placed side by side. Narrowing down to three sample colors can also make choosing a final product much less overwhelming than if you were to choose several variants.

Paint Testers and How to Use Them

Back in the paint aisle, many retailers offer inexpensive sample paint available for a small cost, around $5-$10 each. This small investment can greatly simplify the selection process, whether you’re a DIY, or hiring professionals.

Even more innovative than actually painting on the wall, waiting for it to dry, and then quickly making a decision so you can cover those swatched walls, Sherwin-Williams offers peel and stick samples. Just as easy as they sound, these 8” x 8” paint “stickers” provide a no mess, no dry time alternative to sampling paint colors and selecting the right one for your project.

If you choose to go the traditional route, make sure to get the samples in the finish you intend to use. The sheen of the final product will affect how the project turns out. Flat is the most common and popular finish; it goes on smooth and doesn’t show imperfections as much as a semi-gloss or high-sheen finish.

How to:

  1. Take the samples home and brush them on the walls at eye level. It is a good idea to paint the colors on more than one wall so you can get the total perspective of how the room will truly look.
  2. Use multiple coats of paint. This allows you to see the true color saturation. For some hues, it may be necessary to use a primer first to get the proper visual.
  3. If you’re not starting from scratch pulling a room together with a blank slate and are re-painting an already lived-in room, you may not want to create a Jackson Pollock in your living room. In this case, the peel and stick samples will come in handy when testing paint options.
  4. Consult the experts. Contact the professionals, whether to consult on sheen, brand, finish, or color paint professionals can be invaluable when working on a paint project.

Keep Your Paint Personalized

The most important thing to remember is the paint color you choose is a reflection of you and your personality. It curates the mood and ambiance of your space so getting it right is critical. Go with whatever makes you feel good, whatever it is that you like, regardless of trends or design fads. Have fun with the process, if you’re enjoying yourself when selecting your colors and staying true to what you like, the rest is as easy as the tips provided here. With the right arsenal of tools and samples, choosing a paint color does not have to be a daunting task!

How to Estimate the Cost of Hiring a Professional Painter

Painting interior walls is without a doubt one of the most common and simple ways to revive and refresh the look and feel of a home. There are endless possibilities with infinite colors and brands to choose from. But is it a DIY project, or something to hire professionals to do? Knowing what it will cost to hire a professional will help you make the best decision for your painting needs.

3 Things to Know to get an Accurate Estimate

The cost to paint a room is typically based on square footage and can be anywhere from $2-$6 per square foot, and the overall cost to paint a room ranges between $955 to $2,890. To get the most accurate estimate of what it will cost here are 3 things to do to determine.

The Size of the Room

To begin you will need to measure to find the area of the room. By adding the length of each wall, and then multiplying it by the height of the room you will get your total square footage. If ceilings, baseboards or trim will be a part of the paint job, make sure to add that into the coverage area. It’s also important to note that you will need to subtract footage for doors and windows by using the same width by length formula.

The Cost of Paint

The coverage area will determine how much paint will be needed for the project. 1 gallon of paint covers about 400 square feet. Paint costs can range from $20 to $100 per gallon. Prices vary based on type of paint, and also professionals can get paint at lower cost per gallon than homeowners.

Cost of Labor

Labor costs are generally estimated in two ways; either by the coverage area per square foot plus materials, or by the hour. Square footage labor costs can range from $2-$6 per square foot, and hourly labor costs can be $20-$50 an hour. Most professionals however use the coverage area to determine the cost of labor.

Other Costs

There may be additional costs to consider when hiring a professional painter.  These costs can include painting supplies, room preparation such as moving furniture, repairing damaged walls, texturing and cleanup.

The Truth About White Walls: White Paint Demystified

It is no secret that the most efficient way to add appeal and spruce up your home is a fresh coat of paint. Every year paint manufacturers and interior designers produce a list of the best interior paint trends for the year. For 2021, you may be surprised to learn that the tried and true gray wall is out, and white walls are in —especially if you’re looking to increase the resale value of your home. According to this article from Suzanne Powers Realty group, “Buyers’ color preferences are stronger than ever…cleanliness tops the list of must-haves,” which puts white shades back at the top of the list of best interior paint colors.

White paint seems easy enough to work with, how hard can it be, it’s white? In actuality, the color variations in white can make it very challenging to select the right shade of white paint color.  With various factors affecting the hue’s appearance once on the wall, homeowners should follow these tips to debunk and demystify the challenges of the great white wall.

Selecting Your Shade

Whether you’re looking for classic white, bright white, creamy white, a warm tone, or a cool white, understanding the nuances of undertones, and the lighting situation in the space that you’re painting are two important factors when choosing what shade of white paint to use.

Cool whites with undertones of blue and gray have a crisp, clean appearance, while white with undertones of red and yellow are categorized as warm whites and offer a cozy, relaxed ambiance. While personal preference and decor play a role in deciding which end of the spectrum is best, consider the region you live in, and the lighting of the space suggests the Director of Color Marketing and Design Services for Sherwin-Williams. If you live in an area with a lot of bright, natural light filtering through, you may want to opt for a bright, cool white shade whereas in an area that tends to have colder, gray weather, a warmer tone may be the better choice.

Classic White Walls

It’s hard to go wrong with a classic. Classic whites are favored for their clean, seamlessly blendable look. These shades are perfect for white painted walls, cabinets, doors, trim, or anywhere in the home. They complement a wide range of decor, architecture, and style.

Bright White Paint

The bright whites are ideal for a sleek, modern design. Pure, untinted whites that feel like a cool breath of fresh air. Free of any undertone, a bright white paint is a good choice for spaces that see a range of different lighting throughout the day.

Creamy White

Soft, relaxing, and cozy creamy white paint adds warmth to your room with perfectly creamy, off-white shades. Warm creamy whites offset natural blue tones to give a warmer, cozy feeling to the space.

Prepare to Take Walls to the White Side

When deciding on white interior wall paint, the sheen is just as important as the shade. Depending on the lighting, high gloss will help to brighten up a room, while flat paint with as little sheen as possible absorbs the most light and gives the truest color, but it doesn’t camouflage wear and smudges well. Eggshell or a semi-gloss white paint fit a variety of applications and are trusted, popular choices for interior paint.

White walls are unforgiving, they show every smudge, dent, scratch imaginable, so being properly prepped is crucial to the painting process. Patch any holes or imperfections beforehand. If there are significant stains or uneven color, apply a stain-blocking primer prior to applying the topcoat.

Before committing to a white shade, consider the permanent fixtures like flooring, trim, cabinetry, and light fixtures. The wall color should pull all these elements together

Final Thoughts

Working with a color like white can add a level of sophistication, and its crisp, clean look works well with most decor and in a variety of spaces. When working with predominantly one color, avoid the space becoming boring by adding depth and layers using a variety of textures and pops of color in your furnishings, pillows, artwork, and textiles. Accent walls, colored cabinetry, and interior painted doors are also great ways to play off a white wall for an added area of interest.

Painting Your Home Will Make You Happy – 2021 Painting Survey

Sherwin-Williams released results from a survey of over 1200 homeowners and the biggest takeaway was this: painting your home will make you happy.

According to the survey, a large majority of homeowners (72%) responded that they think there is a positive emotional impact that results from painting a space. We obviously wholeheartedly agree and see this over and over again from our satisfied customers after we finish painting for them.

Big Painting Plans This Year

Another big takeaway from the survey: everyone has big painting plans this year. After spending more than the usual amount of time at home in the past couple of years, homeowners are ready for a change and a refresh.

  • More than half of all homeowners (56%) plan to paint an area in their home in the next 12 months.
  • A large majority of millennial homeowners (74%) plan to paint an area of their homes in the next 12 months

Most Popular Rooms to Paint

What is the frontrunner for rooms to paint? The bedroom comes out slightly ahead in the polls before the living room.

  • Of those homeowners planning to paint in the next 12 months, half plan to paint their bedroom (49% bedroom, 47% living room, 42% bathroom, 33% kitchen).

Pinterest Influence

When looking for color inspiration, the large majority of homeowners turn to Pinterest (62%), according to the Sherwin-Williams survey. Don’t forget about Instagram, too. Check out the most Instagram worthy colors of this year.

Test Run Paint Colors

While we can’t imagine not testing out a paint color before painting a room, there are those who just go for it. We’re solidly on Team Test though and highly recommend purchasing paint samples or swatches and painting them on your wall before committing. You don’t want to live with a color you don’t like, nor do you want to have to pay to have the room repainted.

  • Nearly one in three homeowners do not test colors before painting (28%).
  • More than 50% of millennial homeowners purchase a paint sample to toss on their walls.

How to Create an Accent Wall with Paint

Creating an accent wall, also called a feature wall, is one of the easiest, quickest, and most affordable ways to make a design statement in your home. There are endless possibilities—think stripes, color blocks, ombre, two-tone, zigzags, etc. — and it’s currently a very popular home trend.

Pros of Painting an Accent Wall

Painting a single accent wall in a room allows you to make bold choices, whether with pattern or color, without overpowering the whole room. It adds visual interest to the entire space and what’s more, when you are ready for a change a few years down the road, it’s easy to update with another coat of paint.

Choosing an Accent Wall Location

Place your accent wall carefully. Whichever one you designate as the feature wall, that’s different from the other walls, will be the focal point of the space. Your eye will immediately go to the wall that is different. Behind a bed in a bedroom, behind the sink in the bathroom, or a wall of bookshelves are popular placements. Generally, you want to choose a large, uninterrupted wall that is not broken up by doors, windows, or cabinets.

Use a solid contrasting color or shade in the same color family on your accent wall. For shades, consult a paint swatch and use ones that are one or two shades lighter or darker than the main color. To create contrast, understanding the color wheel is helpful.

colorblocked wall

Colorblocking

This type of accent wall design is simple, yet bold. Colorblocking is painting blocks of color in geometric shapes. It could be as simple as painting the bottom half of the wall one color and a different one on the top. Or just a band of color around the top of the wall near the ceiling.

ombre wall

Ombre

The ombre trend has appeared in everything from clothing to hair color, and now accent walls. Ombre is a French word that means, “to shade.” In English, we use the word to describe the effect created by the transition from one color to another by moving through shade variations of those colors. It creates a beautiful effect when used on a statement wall.

Texture

Walls with architectural interest like board and baton or shiplap make excellent feature walls. The depth and variety created by the wood really pops when painted. It’s not terribly expense to achieve, either.

Stripes

Adding stripes to an accent wall can really alter the mood of a room depending on the color combination you choose.  Achieve a sophisticated feel blush and cream colors or a fun, vibrant atmosphere with primary colors.
