Rooms Prioritization When Painting a Whole House

Repainting an entire home room by room is a huge undertaking that takes planning, prioritization, and a bit of finesse so your daily life is disrupted as little as possible over the course of the project. When planning to paint a whole house, you will need to move furniture, cover furniture, protect floors, prep the walls for painting, and you’ll likely be without important rooms for a period of time. To make the process easier and less disruptive, follow these tips to prioritize rooms in your home for painting.

Paint with a Purpose

Why are you painting? Are you doing a home remodel, kitchen, or bathroom renovation? Are you preparing to put your house on the market or just making updates? Knowing your end goal before you paint will help you decide what room order to follow during the process. Knowing your end goal may also be helpful when determining what paint colors to choose, what type of supplies you’ll need, and how much paint you will need to purchase.

Determine Room Order

If you are painting your entire home, consider what rooms will make the most impact or which will require the most work and time. Consider what will impact your daily living the most with that room out of commission and start there or wait to do that area last and work on less used spaces first. Determining an order can help the process seem less daunting and keep you to a schedule.

Bedroom

Painting your master bedroom first is a good place to start when painting a whole home. If you have guest bedrooms, you can sleep in there until the job is done, or even spend a night or two camped out in the living room if needed. Getting the master out of the way allows you to resume normalcy quickly with a place to sleep and access to bathroom facilities while you tackle the other rooms of the house. Once you have a beautiful new space to wake up in every day, it will add to the motivation to complete the rest of the renovations.

Kitchen

If you’re tackling a whole house painting project room by room, the kitchen is a great first or second room to start with, especially if your renovations include new appliances or new cabinet installation or painting the kitchen cabinets for a fresh look. Starting with the kitchen is a good idea because if the kitchen is inoperable, regular life can get put on hold until the project is completed. There may be added expenditures on dining out or take out.

Living Area

For many, the living room or general living spaces often take up a decent amount of time and require a fair amount of effort. Whether you’re painting yourself or hiring professional painters, living rooms, dens, and living spaces tend to be larger rooms with a lot of furniture and things that will need to be moved, covered, and protected. It is one of the most commonly used areas of the home, and the space that is used for company and entertaining so attention to detail and clean work is imperative. Clearing the space of furniture and other items into other rooms to make room for painting can also be disruptive to everyday life. Typically, tackling the living areas at the end of painting your whole house is a good plan of action.

Laundry Room, Home Gyms, Refinished Basements

Rooms like the laundry room, home gyms, playrooms, basement recreational spaces are good to save for last. These are less commonly used rooms, are lower priority, and tend to be smaller with fewer things to move and protect and will be able to be done quickly, causing less disruption to daily routines than larger, more common rooms.

Paint it Pink! Stylish Shades of Pink Interior Paint is a Trend That’s Here to Stay

Pink walls have proven to have obvious staying power and their popularity is only continuing to grow with designers and DIY enthusiasts preoccupied by the powers of pink.

The playful hue is popping up everywhere from bedrooms and nurseries to dining rooms, bathrooms, and so much more. With an array of shades to choose from, ranging from the popular millennial pink and subtle near neutrals, to bold magenta, pink paint trends are a force to be reckoned with and remain a popular interior design trend of 2021.

How Pink Paint Trends Rose to Power

Color psychology suggests that different colors can have an impact on our moods, feelings, and even behaviors. The color pink is thought to be a calming color associated with love, kindness, and femininity. Some shades of pale pink are described as relaxing, while very bright, vibrant shades can be stimulating or even aggravating. Many people immediately associate the color with all things feminine and girly, but pink is no longer just for the girls.

How did pink infiltrate its way into being one of the hottest, long-lasting interior paint and design trends that continues to evolve? It all started with Pantone Rose Quartz 2016 color of the Year. This sugary pastel pink evolved into the popular millennial pink, a vivid blush tone that represents the strength and modernity of its namesake generation. For many, color associations are tied to a memory or experience. Shades of pink symbolize feelings of joy, love, creativity, innocence, vibrancy, and even euphoria. With such powerful emotional impact and versatility, it is the perfect option for interior wall paint. Pink walls can work as a neutral or as a bold statement accent, it all comes down to the shade you choose and how you match furnishings and decor with it.

Choose Your Perfect Shade of Pink Interior Paint

Choosing the right hues to decorate your home is not easy, color can help differentiate an environment and create the mood. From pleasant and relaxing to vibrant and invigorating, pinks are incredibly versatile, with so many varied shades of pink paint, creating your perfect space is simple whether you’re looking for sweet and romantic or striking and bold.

There are several factors to consider when choosing the right shade of pink interior paint for your home.

  • Lighting
  • Size
  • Functionality

Decorating with Pink Walls

Decorating with pink walls is all about selecting the right hue. Once you’ve decided on the right shade, there is no need to feel nervous about committing to a pink room. Think of pink as a neutral. Compliment warm pink hues with light whitened wood, luxe whites and griege tones, soft fabrics, and textures create a cozy environment. Pair pink with luxe materials such as marble, brass accents, metallics, and velvet.

The key to avoiding a room looking too feminine is to stay clear of overly feminine cliches such as floral patterns, ruffles, polka dots, or stripes. Stick to clean lines and add layers of masculine accessories such as industrial furnishings, black accents, wood, and leather.

Use brighter, bold shades of pink in spaces such as a foyer, an office, or a bedroom to make a statement with interesting and creative decor.

Create a Look You’ll Love with Sherwin Williams ColorSnap® Paint Color Visualizer Tool

The easiest way to choose the best interior paint color is to start with a color palette you love. Choosing your favorite color as a base to build your palette is a great way to get started and will ensure you are pointed in the right direction. However, there are other factors to consider. Which room are you redoing? Are you designing around a specific theme or decor inspiration? Are you getting ready to sell? Whether you’re choosing a different palette for every room, or a unified scheme, making sure the paint colors you choose to align with your goals is important—and what’s more, making sure you make the right choice before the brush meets the wall is critical. That’s where color visualizer tools, like Sherwin Williams’ ColorSnap® come in really handy.

Using Color Theory to Find Inspiration

Creating a color scheme can seem daunting when you have no place to start, and hundreds of thousands of paint colors and shades (and don’t even get started on the sheen discussion) to choose from. You don’t have to be an artist or an interior designer or study color theory to get great ideas from a little color wheel. Using a color wheel to see how colors relate to one another can help you decide on a color scheme quickly. While the color wheel will merely show basic colors and their relationships, and likely won’t be the actual paint shades you use, color theory is a great starting point. From there, you can begin to select paint colors to start building a palette based on your design inspiration, and color preferences.

Selecting Paint Colors with Swatches and Samples

While building inspiration and selecting individual paint colors using tools like color theory and inspiration boards is helpful, you still don’t know how the colors will look. Most hardware or paint suppliers offer paint swatches and samples to take with you when deciding on paint colors. Chips, swatches, and even small sample-sized containers of paint are all useful tools in the initial planning stages of building a palette, creating a vision or inspo board, or matching decor however, they don’t do much for knowing how the color will look on an entire wall, or throughout a whole room. With the help of technology, you can ensure you choose the right color every time—the first time.

Room visualizer technology is helping designers and homeowners alike make better home renovation decisions, from choosing flooring to wall paint, cabinet colors, and more. Design Inspiration: Instagrammable Paint Colors in 2021

Farrow and Ball’s Hague Blue

Sites like Pinterest have historically been the go-to place inspiration, with the ability to build customized inspo-boards with direct links to the bloggers and products bringing our design dreams to life for designers and clients alike. The emergence of social media has sites like Instagram stepping up to the interior design plate as a place where people can share their lives in real-time inviting the world together in a series of images and cultivating creativity from every angle.

After an introspective year, our home design aesthetics have shifted, Instagram data compiled by DIY.com indicates that we have all been left feeling a little blue—at least as far as trending paint colors are concerned.

Instagram Post-Worthy Shades of Blue

An overwhelming 46,589 hashtags on Instagram reveal Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue is the ‘It’ shade this year. However, the deep blue-green shade that is topping the charts is not the only shade of blue trending. Stiffkey Blue (also from Farrow & Ball), Little Greene’s French Gray, Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy, and Dulux’s Denim Drift are among the top ten most hash tagged trending paint colors filling our Instagram feeds in 2021.

Why So Blue?

Why are homeowners so drawn to hues of blue? Paint brands and design experts across the industry predictions for 2021 gave hints to shades that promote and create a sense of calm and well-being in our homes, especially as we all spend more and more time there. Timeless, clean blues have a sense of nostalgia and a soothing effect in the home despite being cooler hues.

So why Hague Blue? A deep rich blue with green undertones has an overall calming effect while also exuding confidence, and a feeling of being grounded, which after the past year, is no surprise we would all be looking for the calm amidst the storm of events.

Design Inspiration: How to Use Trending Blue Paint

Blue hues are extremely versatile and are being displayed on Instagram in a plethora of inspiring home designs throughout the platform. From kitchen islands and cabinets, to bathroom walls, accent interior doors, fireplace mantles, to furniture popular blues can be used in a wide variety of ways to bring out the beauty of natural materials. These tones can evoke anything from “formal and traditional” to “rich and luxurious”. Hague Blue, although a darker tone, brings lightness to a space. When used in the right way, Hague blue and other rich blue hues, can help to create a focal point or create a calming backdrop for plants carrying on the trend of bringing elements of nature indoors.

Using Color Theory to Create Color Schemes for Paint Palettes

,

With the spring and summer months upon us, many homeowners will begin to embark on various home improvement projects. Whether full renovations are in order, or you’re simply updating and redecorating, a fresh coat of paint is usually part of the equation. Paint is an affordable and easy way to upgrade and completely transform a space but deciding on the perfect paint color can be a daunting task.

Tools like a professional consultation, visualizer technology, design magazines, social media, and forums like Pinterest, can all be useful to collect ideas for inspiration, but when it comes to choosing the right paint for your project, understanding color theory can be an invaluable resource when making your ideas a reality. The Spruce’s article “Tips for Choosing Interior Paint Colors” mentions color theory as a useful tool when choosing a color scheme and eventually building a palette for your project. Understanding the relationship between colors can help you to choose shades that complement each other and fit with your overall design vision and decor elements.

Understanding Color Theory

With endless colors, shades, and paint products available, creating a color scheme for a given project can be an uphill task. Where do you start? Understanding the basics of color theory can help you create color schemes with a few basic, simple color concepts. To truly understand how to use color, it is important to understand individual colors to create harmonious color schemes and dreamy palettes.

Color theory is more than the color wheel, while a color wheel is a useful tool to take a deeper dive into understanding the relationships between individual colors, there are many other aspects to consider when truly understanding how to work with color.

Color Temperature

Color temperature refers to how “warm” or “cool” a color is. At the very basic explanation, blues, greens, purples, and greens are “cool” colors while yellows, reds, oranges, pinks are your “warm” colors. Most people view color temperature in absolutes, and while there are definite points that determine the warmness or coolness as a color, some, like violet and yellow green are almost undefinable, or universal, meaning they can be used as both warm and cool tones. Understanding relative color temperature can be helpful when choosing a paint color to find the exact shade you have in mind more quickly.

Undertones

One of the most effective techniques to choosing the perfect shade of paint, especially as it relates to neutrals, is understanding color undertones. All colors have a mass tone, the color you directly see, and many colors may also have an undertone. Identifying the undertones in a color scheme or palette is essential to creating harmonious color combinations—and here’s why: If you seem to have created a color scheme that should work, but doesn’t, the undertones of the selected colors are likely fighting each other instead of working together. Start by comparing like colors side-by-side so you can examine the differences in undertone.

Color Harmony

To create harmonious color combinations, start with the basics, the twelve hues of the color wheel are divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. The three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow in theory can be mixed together to create all other colors. By mixing two adjacent primary colors, the three secondary colors, green, violet, and orange are created. Tertiary colors are hues created by mixing a primary with an adjacent secondary color. Six tertiary colors are yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange, and yellow orange.

Color Schemes for Paint vs. Color Palettes

Often used interchangeably, color schemes and color palettes are different.

Color Schemes refers to the framework of how colors are selected and paired together. A color scheme is based on color theory. There are different types of color schemes. To easily start creating color schemes you need a basic, inexpensive color wheel to show how colors relate to one another. The placement of colors around the wheel is not random, but rather the spectral order (rainbow), forms a complete circle. Each color’s placement is designed to help identify harmonious combinations, whether used in mixing paint, or building schemes, a color wheel can be a useful tool to the basics of understanding how to work with color in an effective way.

A color palette is more specific and refers to the actual colors chosen based on a decided upon color scheme. A palette is specific shades or even the exact paint colors being used in the scope of a specific project.

Types of Color Schemes that Create Color Harmony

  • Monochromatic is made from a single-color family. In most palettes and designs, monochromatic schemes are made up of tints, shades, and tones from the same color family combined with white, black, and gray.
  • Complementary or two-color harmony is created by pairing two colors positioned directly across from one another on the color wheel. A complementary scheme has the highest degree of color contrast.
  • Analogous two or more colors that are positioned side-by-side on the color wheel. To create this scheme, choose a main color on the wheel and then choose two to three tones directly to the left or right of the main color.
  • Triad is a combination of three hues that are equally spaced from one another along the color wheel. For example, red, yellow, blue or green, purple, orange color families.
  • Tetradic two sets of complementary colors. Using four colors can be a challenge but can also create a rich color scheme by using a dominant color and three accent colors to create a balance of cool and warm colors.

Using Color Theory to Choose Paint Colors

Using the basic understanding of color theory and how colors relate to one another gives you a leg up on choosing the perfectly balanced color palette when giving your space a makeover. These techniques are useful for creating a cohesive interior design plan, and helps put together all aspects from the main wall color, accent walls, cabinetry colors, and decor theme. Use color theory to choose an exterior paint and trim combination with high curb appeal.

5 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Professional Painting Services

The decision to hire professional painting services in the Charlotte or Winston-Salem area to update your home means investing in an excellent, high-quality paint job that saves you the headache of trying to tackle the job yourself. The benefits of hiring the pros range from simply leaving the hard work to someone else, to a satisfaction guaranteed end result; and in many cases, leaving it to the experts can be cheaper in the long run, with long lasting quality.

Whether you’re updating the whole house interior, just a room or two, there are some things that will make the job much easier and less time consuming if you do the prep ahead of time. Here is a list of five total home painting prep tips to consider before the paint crew arrives:

Interior Home Painting Prep

Preparing your home a few days before the scheduled paint crew arrives ensures that you will have a positive experience throughout the entire process and with the proper preparation, can save both time and money on the entire job—and your painting contractor will thank you. You can always consult your painting contractor ahead of time for any specifics they may require, but here is a good list of things to start with to make any painting job go more smoothly.

  1. Move and Cover All Furniture- If possible, remove small hard furnishings such as lamps or coffee tables from the area. Flowers Painting will move and replace all large items such as dressers, couches, beds and more.
  2. Remove Wall Hangings, Artwork, and Window Treatments- Carefully remove all picture frames, mirrors, decorative clocks, wall hangings, and window treatments and store them appropriately. Relocating these items to another room is best, so they are not in the way of the painters or susceptible to rogue paint or damage.
  3. Store all Knick Knacks and Ornaments- While covering these items is always an option, they are best protected by being removed from the workspace and stored in another room temporarily. This will protect precious items from any damage.
  4. Prep and Clean Walls and Surrounding Areas- Generally speaking, a light wash with soapy water to prepare the walls is sufficient for wall preparation, however some professional painting services may require additional prep such as primer or taping. Leave this portion of the prep to the professionals.
  5. Vacate the Area- Depending on the scope of the job, you may have a pretty large painting crew for a few days, or at least a few hours. Vacating the area is the best idea, especially if you have pets or small children. Not only will you ensure you and your family are out of the way, but that you’re safe from potential hazards and fumes.

Benefits of Getting Your Home Painter-Ready

With the proper preparation, the professional painters can start the job immediately upon arrival with very little downtime or obstacle to disrupt the flow of their work. Removing personal belongings and protecting furniture, appliances, and decor mitigates the risk of damage during the process and protects your items from debris and flying paint. Making sure that you are prepared and ready for professional painting services ensures your experience will go smoothly and that you will get the full benefits of hiring a team of experts.

Add Style and Personality with Colorfully Painted Interior Doors

Interior design trends are shifting and in 2021 designers are seeing the ever-popular accent wall fading away in favor of colorfully painted interior doors. Painted interior doors, much like painted front doors, are a simple detail that can really elevate the aesthetic and appeal of your home. This small pop of color is a simple way to add character without the commitment. Paint color trends for 2021 suggest that the look of painted doors when paired with neutral walls and lighter surrounding trim, can provide a striking and dramatic look—without the dramatic price of repainting an entire wall or room.

To Paint or Not to Paint

Maybe you’re ready to commit to painting your doors, or maybe you’re on edge wondering if adding door color is right for your home. An unexpected hue adds even more style and personality to your home. Painted interior doors break up large sections of white, give emphasis to a focal point of the room, and add a pop of color in an understated, yet impactful way. Painted doors are also easily changed, without a complete overhaul of the entire space.

Choosing the Right Color

As with any decision regarding paint colors, consider the overall theme and atmosphere you hope to create. Bright colors add energy to a space, while neutrals and muted tones evoke a sense of calmness and comfort. Black interior doors give both a dramatic and understated feeling and is the simplest color to start with.

Interior Door Color Trends 2021

There is no distinct “trendiest color” of the year for interior doors—anything goes. From the all-time favorite classics of creamy whites, grays, and browns to bold dark shades the painted door trend is versatile enough for any home.

Pastels– Pastel shades can be a stunning accent in combination with furniture, décor, and hardware chosen from the same palette resulting in a light and peaceful atmosphere.

Dark Shades– Black is always trending, especially for interior doors, and in designs that focus on more industrial glass and iron elements in the space. Dark blues and greens add richness and provide the space with depth and character.

Colors– Interior door color trends of 2021 suggest a wide scale of color from vibrant shades to muted tones and everything in between. Choose more energetic shades such as reds, corals, and oranges or the vividness of yellows and rosy hues. Choose ocean blues combined with neutrals or muted natural greens and earth tones to create soothing, relaxing spaces.

A top kitchen design trend in 2021 to add depth and dimension are dual-tone cabinets. Inspired by what started with colorful kitchen islands and neutral cabinetry, this trend has evolved. When and When Not to Use High Gloss Paint

Understanding the various paint sheens available will help you make an informed choice when buying paint.  High gloss paint is the most reflective paint sheen. It has a super smooth finish that looks almost like lacquer and is the polar opposite of a flat paint that delivers a matte, muted finish.

At one time, high gloss paint was simply a practical paint finish choice, but some homeowners are expanding their paint horizons and using it to make dramatic design statements. Some people are nervous about the boldness of high gloss paint. To ease your apprehensions, we’ve compiled a list of Dos and Don’ts when it comes to high gloss paint.

Do Use It in Kitchens and Baths

The most traditional use of high gloss paint is in bathrooms and kitchens. These high moisture, high traffic areas of the home are perfect candidates to realize the benefits of high gloss paint. The gloss in the paint protects woodwork from moisture, has a surface that is easy to wipe clean, and can withstand chemical cleaning agents better than a flat or eggshell finish. If you are painting cabinets in your kitchen or bath, high gloss paint is a wise choice.

Don’t Shy Away from Untraditional Uses

Pairing bold, bright colors with a high gloss paint finish can yield beautiful results in rooms outside of your kitchen and bathrooms. You can transform your playroom, mudroom, children’s room, master suite, dining room, interior doors, even ceilings with high gloss paint.

Do Use It on Trim and Molding

Trim around doorways, windows and baseboards take on a lot of wear and tear. Plus, it has a knack for picking up dirt and grime. High gloss paint is the standard choice for trim pieces that need an extra thick layer of paint to withstand the additional abuse delivered to these areas.

Don’t Use on Highly Irregular Walls

High gloss paint accentuates imperfections and draws your eye to them. The gloss creates a mirror-like surface that reflects light.  If you have uneven, textured walls that you don’t plan on fixing before painting, it’s best to skip the gloss and go with more of a flat finish.

Do Use a Professional

High gloss paint is unforgiving. It highlights every brushstroke and every flaw on your wall or trim. Wall prep, high-quality tools, and proper painting technique become very important for achieving a beautiful high gloss finish. Hire a professional painting company for great results.
